Josephine Anderson Obituary

Josephine (Josie) Mary Ann Anderson nee Redhead

Born December 9th, 1950, in York Factory, MB

Passed March 9, 2023, in Winnipeg, MB

Josie peacefully passed away at 72, at South East PCH in Winnipeg with her family by her side. A member of Fox Lake Band, several communities across Canada will miss her presence, spirit, and love.

She was an avid beader and along with teaching family how to bead, she gifted many of her crafts to them while also selling her jewelry. She worked at St. Boniface Hospital as an Indigenous Interpreter for Cree patients.

Josie is survived by her siblings: Dianne, Iris, and Anne; her children: Trevor Katona and Jasmine Anderson; her grandchildren: Cassy, Nettie, Robby, Debbie, Mackenzie, Darius, and Carmel; and many nieces & nephews and their children.

Josie’s sister Kathy named her firstborn daughter after her. The two sisters endured much in their life together. The two would laugh and speak in Cree for hours. And so, her niece, “little Josie,” lives on as her namesake.

In death, she and her husband Rick Anderson (March 4, 2016) are probably rolling tobacco together and laughing as they enjoy being together again.

Her parents Johnson Redhead from Shamattawa, Manitoba, and Eliza Jean Redhead nee Spence from York Factory, Manitoba, and her siblings: Joshua, Mary, Howard, Clifford, Roderick, Phyllis, Eddie, Hector-Calvin, Lorraine (Marianne), and Kathleen welcome her to their heavenly homes in the stars.

In the final hours of her time here, with her eyes blue and sparkling, she raised her arm up to hold her two children's hands with her last amount of energy. May she hold hands again with her eldest child, Edmund (Mousy) Redhead, who passed in Churchill, MB with his Grandmother Eliza Redhead and uncle Howard Redhead in October 1974.

She was known as a legend, beautiful, a lover of tobacco, and ready to fight for her loved ones (and for fun mayhem). Like many Mama Bears, “the look” she gave that meant “you have one chance to make things right, or else,” was one endearing part of her that her son and others will miss fondly. Ekosi.

Service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023, from 1pm - 4pm, at Eternal Grace Funerals. Pastor Ken Peters officiating the service starting at 2pm.

"How Great Thou Art"

O Lord my God, When I, in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on a Cross, my burdens gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!
