Maureen Nelson Obituary

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Maureen Jody (Noel)Nelson, on February 4,2021 at the age of 49 years, at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Maureen passed away after struggling from complications after surgery where her health deteriorated quickly.

Maureen was the mother of three children, Jon Mauria, Alyana Renee and Cedric. As with any mother, Maureen had a deep concern for her children and their life choices and their well-being.

Maureen was born in Brandon, Manitoba on April 30,1971 to her parents Jesse and Connie Noel. Her carefree and happy childhood began at Sioux Valley, surrounded, and pampered by her brothers Harley, Joe and Dale, as well as her grandparents John and Annie Noel and great grand parents Demas and Bessie Dowan and the extended families of aunts, uncles and cousins too numerous to mention.

Regretfully, Maureen was a part of the “60’s – 70’s scoop”, and she along with her brothers, spent many years in Oregon and Georgia, U.S.A., Maureen and her brothers returned home to Canada in 1989. They reunited with their grandmother Kay Stevenson as well as several aunts and many old as well as new cousins, and they became acquainted with their sister Glenda whom they had never met. Sadly, many family members had passed away in that span of time while they were away.

Maureen was a great basketball fan, rightfully so as this would be a main and popular sport in the U.S.A.  She also grew up loving music and dancing.

Maureen spent the majority of her years in Canada living in Winnipeg where this community became her family. With her love of music and conveniently living in the city, she enjoyed going to concerts, the last one being the Bryan Adams concert.

Maureen loved getting dressed up and going out for a nice supper on occasion. She also had a love for cooking. She enjoyed cooking and baking, experimenting with new recipes, and producing wonderful dishes.

Maureen also took great delight in touring the Winnipeg Zoo. Because she lived only blocks away from the zoo, she was a frequent visitor.

Maureen is survived by her three children, Jon, Alyana and Cedric, as well as her tow siblings, brother Joe and his wife Amy; and sister Glenda and her husband Scott and their daughter Michante.

Maureen is predeceased by her parents Jesse Noel and Connie Noel, and her brothers Harley and Dale.

Maureen’s life was short, but those who knew her were touched by her generosity and kindness. She had a gentle smile and was quiet in nature. Her memory leaves us with an ache but we will silently treasure those memories of her life that she left with us.

We would like to extend a special ‘thank-you’ to her cousin Dan Hart for being by her side in her final hours.

A traditional ceremony was held on February 11,2021 in Kenora, Ontario and one will be held at a later date this year at Sioux Valley where her ashes will be interred beside her mother in the Dowan Cemetery.
